Scientists from the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” have created a new technology for storing spent nuclear fuel (SNF), which could make Russia more powerful in nuclear power. At the Technoprom-2023 forum, Aleksey Frolov, Head of the NRC Kurchatov Institute, Department of NBICS-Nature-Like Technologies Kurchatov Complex, spoke about the new technology.

There are currently about 450 nuclear reactors worldwide that produce about 900 tons of spent nuclear fuel per year. The problem of storing this fuel is complex and not yet fully resolved. In Russia, spent nuclear fuel is stored in pool storage facilities, the construction of which requires large financial expenditures.

The National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” conducts research on the safe dry storage of spent nuclear fuel in sealed gas-filled containers. This will optimize the modes of storage, transportation and handling of fuel even in emergency situations. This technology can reduce the cost of spent nuclear fuel storage facilities and strengthen Russia’s position in the nuclear industry, as well as facilitate the transportation and storage of spent fuel.
