The long-awaited action movie “The Expendables 4” starring Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham has been released worldwide, including in Russia.
Joining the team of elite mercenaries are Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais and Andy Garcia.
We have already gone to the premiere and will hasten to share our impressions. The film lost Arnold, Bruce, Jet Li and even Mickey Rourke. Was the fourth part of the franchise able to save the new heroes? Looking ahead, I’ll be honest: No, everything is so bad that it’s even offensive. But first things first.
Old-new team that doesn’t suit action
What is the movie about: In the new part, Barney Ross’s team faces terrorists who cause a nuclear conflict between the United States and Russia. The heroes have to save the world again and find the rat among their own.
Back in 2010, Sylvester Stallone made the dream movie of all the boys from the 80s and 90s. Everyone who loved action films of that time. The heroes of the dream team crushed their enemies left and right, mocked each other, and at the same time saved the world. The three-minute meeting between Stallone, Schwartz and Bruce in that film caused delight among fans of video stores.
Warm memories and hair-raising action. What else do you need to just switch off for an hour and a half to two hours and leave the hall with a smile?
The sequel, released two years later, made the smile even wider. “Iron Arnie”, “Die Hard” and “Rambo” no longer only exchanged caustic phrases, but also killed their enemies using various bloody methods. Moreover, other significant action heroes of the end of the last century were also invited to the franchise. Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris added even more polish and charisma to the sequel. It turned out even better than the first film.
For the third time, Stallone called Snipes, Gibson and Ford into the wild gang. Not as epic as the previous part, but still good. And all this had one thing in common: the script of a film franchise is not so important, personalities and heroes are much more important. Positive and negative. Simply because they are from childhood and youth.
But unfortunately, “The Expendables 4” lost everything that made the series story-driven. The lack of Hollywood A-listers, proper action and humor showed that this franchise was clearly heading in the wrong direction.
After all, the main idea has always been simple – bloody action, hand-to-hand combat, shooting and jokes from forgotten action heroes. The names on the posters showcased the film even without the expected trailer. The Expendables 4 no longer casts any of these iconic names. Among the newcomers is Megan Fox, the last I’ve never played “baby boy”. Some Chinese blonde with tattoos, whom I see for the first time. Rapper Fifty Cent, who obviously got into the film through an acquaintance, having previously starred with Stallone in the sequels to Escape Plan.
Only Asian martial artists Iko Uwaisi and Tony Ja are saved from complete failure of the caste. But this little guy is enough to really interest an unprepared viewer.
This movie was shot on my knees
Even though The Expendables 4 was announced before post-production on the third installment began, what emerged was a clear, hastily shot image. It’s bad for everyone here.
The script may not be that important in any project, but here it is so stupid and meaningless that it becomes simply disgusting. As if the authors were given 40 minutes in the description. Very clumsy, very crooked. In the report, even halfway through watching it, you understand that “The Expendables 4” is not just a lousy movie, a real disaster and a clear low point of the entire series. The film literally goes down in every sense.
Leave the story. After “The Expendables 3” with an age rating of PG-13 (does not imply the presence of a high level of revolution or blood in the frame) and bad reviews from critics, the fourth part returned to the original format with an R rating. It was logical to expect rivers of blood, severed limbs, interesting meaty action scenes. But here too there is a failure.
The action is terrible: It is completely defaced and almost completely removed in front of the transparent display. It sounds strange, but here you can simply get bored during shootouts, in which ugly computer fountains of blood are constantly spinning.
In addition to this, cinematographer Tim Maurice-Jones manages to spoil the impressions of the fight choreography with his shooting style. Tim put his own spin on the phrase “feeling in the middle of the action” and removed most of the fighting from under the heroes’ armpits. The camera is so close to the characters that their movements are simply impressive. The cameraman managed to make even the fight scenes with Iko Uwaisi boring. That’s when the kitchen scene in The Raid 2 gives attention to all the action in The Expendables 4.
After all, we don’t have an A-list Hollywood star, an adequate script and exciting action. Is the movie bad? No. Movie wretchedbecause we have a set of idiotic scenes that constantly cause confusion.
You can create your own project in the same way!
Firstly, the entire film is a Full House program. Here, try to make jokes all the time, with or without a reason. But the characters try to be humorous and end up unfunny and stupid. The only thing he lacks is the off-screen laughter.
Secondly, with the look of an action movie, the film is simply idiotic. I will give just a few examples.
One of the key scenes takes place on a steamboat: limited space, references to the Call of Duty game series, it seemed like a cool idea. But the heroes open points here endless enemy respawn. That is, at some point you simply lose count of those killed, and the enemies continue to drive out the heroes under bullets. And you ask yourself: guys, what container did you run out of?
Another point is the heroine Megan Fox. It looks like Megan thought she was Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad. Her appearance, equipment and makeup for a secret military operation look simply out of place.
It’s as if Megan had just left the gym. Flat tummy, outstanding master, tight-fitting pants. It’s time for the party, now I’ll just leave the towel in the helicopter. Well, just the perfect look to save the world.
And things like that conspicuous and confusingthere’s a lot here.
Curiously, this is not the first action film in director Scott Waugh’s career. Literally in the summer we watched “Nowhere Cooler,” filmed by him. But that action movie looks much better. Perhaps the culprit is that Jackie Chan makes humor and absurdity happen as normal things in an action movie.
Believe me, I understand that the film should not be taken seriously. This is just entertainment for old people – blood-jokes-saving the world. But important ingredients. Delicious charismatic heroes, juicy action, a villain with a twist. Everything here is fresh and unappetizing.
Better not look
The whole movie can be summed up in one thing: all the problems are solved by the proposal of Jason Statham, who just runs back and forth a lot. If you like the idea of such a scenario, you can take the risk of going to the cinema. But I wouldn’t recommend it.
It’s especially a shame for the franchise that Van Damme offered his candidacy in this film as the twin brother of the hero of the second film. This is an homage to my own career. Remembering his spectacular role in the sequel, I understand that it would have clearly turned out better and more interesting. But what we see on the screen today is simply boring.
These are not the Expendables, but brats and bar girls.
