The first OnePlus Watch, released in 2021, was criticized for its limited custom operating system. The move to Wear OS for the OnePlus Watch 2 marks a significant improvement, offering access to a wider range of apps, watch faces and expanded functionality.

OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau has previously advocated using a custom operating system to provide a “smooth and reliable experience” but users found the original watch to be more of a fitness tracker than a versatile smartwatch.
