Alphabet, which owns Google, has agreed to seek $700 million and an update to the Google Play app to settle a 2021 U.S. antitrust lawsuit.

The US Department of Justice and all 50 states have accused Google of collecting unnecessary fees on in-app store purchases and limiting app distribution on Android devices. This has led to increased fees for users.

Google is paying $630 million in restitution to students and $70 million in a fund that will be used by states if the settlement receives final approval from a judge. Customers who purchased applications on the Play Market from August 16, 2016 to September 30, 2023 received at least $2.

Additionally, developers are allowed to open accounts in a system other than Google Play Billing. They are also allowed to provide alternative payment methods other than Google’s systems. [Reuters]
