A new study has shown that joint injections are no more effective than placebo for relieving hand osteoarthritis symptoms. But that’s not all. Many arthritis treatment guidelines call for the use of topical pain relievers as treatment. However, the evidence for the effectiveness of this method is questionable.
So what relieves arthritis pain in the hands? Study author Dr. According to Anna Dössing, these are oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and oral glucocorticoids. And the most effective of them were glucocorticoids (steroids).
Oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs improved hand function and grip strength, while oral steroids improved hand function and quality of life in humans.
All results obtained in the study were published in the journal RMD Open.
