Biologists witnessed an unusual scene while observing a colony of seals in the Point Reyes National Marine Sanctuary. The two-week-old baby, dragged by the waves, struggled to survive. Instead of focusing on potential mates, a nearby alpha male intervened on an unexpected impulse.
Accustomed to dominance, this clumsy hero rushed into the water. He pushed the cub with his body and carefully guided it towards the shore. When the tide threatened to sweep the pup away once again, the seal hero served as a living anchor, keeping him safe.
Reunited with its mother, the cub was safe. Tired but triumphant, the furry savior collapsed onto the sand…his heroic deed completed.
This behavior is contrary to the typical nature of male seals during mating season. They rarely care for their young as they focus on conserving energy and finding a mate. Although some misinterpret this action as misguided mating behavior, researchers believe it is intentional. The male deliberately turned his attention to the cub and ran well away from potential mates to save it.
