Instagram recently started testing a tool in the United States. video selfies to check user age. The system uses artificial intelligence to determine if someone under the age of 18 is trying to impersonate someone of legal age.

According to the social network, the system is used when someone at the age of 13 (the minimum age to register on the platform in the USA) tries to increase their age to over 18. In these cases, a registration is required so that the system can analyze and verify whether a teenager is trying to impersonate an adult.

The previous example will be the focus, but the tool will also do the opposite analysis. That is, adults who have mistakenly registered themselves as minors are also subject to verification.

The investigation of the video selfies is led by London-based startup Yoti, which partners with the social network. Yoti’s systems analyze the person’s characteristics, then both the startup and Instagram delete the video from the recordings.

In addition to selfies, Instagram uses at least two other methods to prove users’ age: providing adult guardian accounts and uploading identity documents.

The second method is controversial, as some people are hesitant to post a photo of a personal document. Therefore, Meta company has committed to keep the records for only 30 days, since after this period the photo of the document is permanently deleted from the servers.

importance of tools

According to Instagram, knowing the correct age of the user is crucial as the experience on the platform varies by age group. Teens do not have the same access as adults, for example, to more voluptuous content or content that contains violence and obscene language.

“We want people to be at least 13 years old to sign up for Instagram. Some countries have a higher minimum age. When we know someone is young (13-17 years old), we can standardize on accounts specific to them, prevent unwanted communications from adults they don’t know, and have options for advertisers to have. “We provide age-appropriate experiences such as limitation. Reach them through ads.”

Instagram

Instagram is trying to change its policies primarily towards minors after a scandal erupted last year. an internal company report published by Wall Street Journalshowed that directors knew that social networking worsened the mental health of teenagers in the United States.

The case was even taken to the US Congress, which held meetings to question what actions Meta executives would take to reverse this negative situation. Internal research has shown that teens experience aesthetic pressure, feelings of inferiority, and even suicidal thoughts from overusing Instagram.
