The YouTube app for smart TVs will now automatically mark key moments in videos, the platform’s CEO Neal Mohan announced on Monday (1). The new feature aims to simplify navigation using the remote control.

The demo shared by Mohan shows key moments of a video highlighted in the video’s progress bar. The user can proceed in small sections as they traditionally do, or choose one of the highlights displayed in the previews at the top.

“We know viewers love watching YouTube in their living rooms, and we continue to innovate to make the TV experience even better. Now you can easily access key moments automatically identified in any video,” the executive said.

Each highlight is accompanied by a headlineit is also automatically generated and minutes are marked in the progress bar, similar to splitting chapters when present in the video.

The new one is available to everyone

According to Mohan, the new feature is already available to all users. Probably, Deployment needs to happen gradually.

It’s unclear whether this feature will also be available for the YouTube app on dongles or consoles, which adopts a similar look to the app for smart TVs. If this feature hasn’t appeared for you yet, it’s worth checking if there are any updates waiting to be downloaded.
