The new technology has already been approved at the legislative level in some parts of the United States.
The German automaker has started delivering the first driverless cars, with about 65 vehicles already registered in California and Nevada. Mercedes has become the first automaker in US history to receive official approval to sell vehicles with Level 3 autonomous driving technology.
Mercedes EQS and S-Class buyers can subscribe to the Drive Pilot system for an additional $2,500 per year.
The autopilot will be recognized by the turquoise lights on the vehicle body. Mercedes received special permission to use this lighting color.
But the technology is currently only available in California and Nevada. The automaker plans to use those states to test the system, hoping that other parts of the United States will also allow Autopilot in the future.
It’s important to note that Drive Pilot Level 3 has its limitations. It can only be used on certain roads at speeds below 65 km/h and during daylight hours.
