Aksoy, who used pseudonyms such as Ron Aksoy and Dave Durden, operated between 2013 and 2022. He used his network of companies and online stores to sell fake Cisco networking equipment. These devices, often made from cheap and unreliable components, were sold at greatly discounted prices, disguised as original Cisco products.
The US military purchased some of this fake equipment. This fake technology evolved into “highly sensitive military and government applications,” including stealth systems and flight simulators for fighter jets such as the F-15 and F-18.
The U.S. Department of Justice did not say how the military obtained the devices, but the incident highlights the vulnerability of government supply chains to online markets known for their gray technology.
