iOS 17.5 released for iPhone; check out the news

Apple made iOS 17.5 generally available on this date Monday (13). In addition to containing a number of interesting new features, the mid-cycle update marks an important moment for the iPhone system: AAOpening the ecosystem for third-party app stores in Europe.

While the App Store remains the only channel for downloading apps in other regions, iOS 17.5 is still a significant update. The build includes new features, bug fixes and optimizations aimed at improving the user experience.

Downloading apps outside the App Store

In iOS 17.5, Apple finally opens the doors of the system to downloading applications from outside the App Store. The measure was not taken voluntarily, but rather adapting the company to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in force in the European Union (EU).

Classified as company guard, It must meet certain criteria on platforms where Apple dominates — and iOS is one of them. Therefore, the company needs to create a more favorable scenario for competition with other competitors acting as an application market.

Therefore, starting from iOS 17.5, it will be possible to download applications from stores other than the App Store. Obviously, this is limited to EU countries and interested developers must meet various requirements to open their own store.

The end of Apple Store exclusivity isn’t the only new feature of iOS 17.5. The update also offers:

• “Cross-Platform Tracking Detection”: iPhone now has the ability to detect unknown AirTags in the environment and disable the accessory’s communication with its owner;
• “Pride Shine” wallpaper for the Lock Screen honoring the LGBTQ+ community.
• New offline mode for Apple News+, providing access to the Today and News+ tab. In addition to the new game “Quartiles”;
• New dynamic design for Apple Podcasts widget;
• Distribution of applications via web pages;
