Beeline has started shutting down 3G in Moscow in 2022 and plans to shut it down in 10 more regions by the end of this year. Meanwhile, MegaFon continues to use 3G in some regions, but is accelerating the process of redistributing 3G frequencies in favor of LTE.
Tele2, which completed important work in this direction in 2021, plans to add more than 600 new base stations this year.
Experts state that 3G no longer supports the speeds required for modern applications and with the increase in LTE (VoLTE)-based voice calls, 3G is becoming increasingly “unnecessary”. By 2025, LTE is expected to serve 81% of mobile users, while 3G is predicted to fall to just 4%.
