The new film “A Quiet Place: Day One” was shown in Russian cinemas.
This is a prequel to the main duology about how the invasion of blind aliens began. The director and screenwriter this time was Michael Sarnoski, and not John Krasinski, who was responsible for the first films.
Expectations for the film were outstanding, despite the not-so-famous cast. Where did it all start? Were you able to correctly demonstrate to the viewer and save the previous picture? Let’s figure it out together. We went to the premiere and want to share our impressions.
This is not a scary movie
What is the movie about?: The story centers on former poet Samira, who is suffering from terminal cancer. After leaving a hospice with others to go to a show in the city center, she finds herself in the middle of an invasion.
After surviving the first attack along with her cat, and realizing she didn’t have much time left, she went to Harlem for the pizza she remembers from her childhood.
From the very first frames, the authors emphasize that the entire action in the film will revolve around sounds. What and how we hear. For example, in the opening credits they write that the average noise level in New York is 90 dB (like a scream). And after some time it will drop to almost zero.
Despite the fact that the film is marketed as horror, the scariest moments are actually few and far between. They keep the tension, but do not at all try to achieve chilling horror from the viewer.
But how epic and dynamically the meteorite-alien rain is shown. How flocks of monsters rapidly fall to Earth and sweep away everything in their path. Here the influence of producer Michael Bay immediately became visible. The scale was felt from the first frames.
Numerous burning cars, broken windows and counters, parts of skyscrapers demolished by a deer – it’s just something. Immerses perfectly in Etoee.
However, society quickly realizes that the aliens are blind and do not respond to sound. This suddenness seems a little ridiculous, but generally fits within the framework of the story.
I express special respect to the directors for the way they played with the environment of New York. Those places that have long been cozy and quiet, in the blink of an eye turn into extremely dangerous and terrifying locations. You literally can’t feel safe anywhere.
This is a personal movie
Family history comes to the fore, as before. Only if in the first two films she was already there from the very beginning, now the situation is the opposite – Samira was not looking for a family for herself, she was dying and hoped to end her life according to her own rules. But that’s exactly what she failed to do.
Here the emphasis is on the transformation of the main character as a person. And on how her worldview gradually changes.
The second important character to pose the question is Eric. His story is simple and plot-wise stupid, but so human. You will probably empathize with this hero no less than with Samira, and maybe even more.
It is pleasing that the authors of the film were able to fit a complex and thoughtful story into a short (by modern standards) running time of 1.5 hours. At one point it seems that you are being immersed in some kind of TV series, where time can drag on forever.
And, as always, the actors are shown a wide range of emotions without any words at all. I don’t need to say anything for the viewer to understand. Everyone reads themselves: through gestures, actions and various actions.
You get into the film from the first minutes. And if it starts off briskly and quite dynamically, then closer to the end this pace gradually slows down. And you don’t even notice how the action horror has turned into a nice and “strong” drama.
And yes, some praise here in the city for Frodo the cat. This is a full-fledged character in the film, which is interesting to watch. With his “game” he can compete with many human representatives of the industry.
A quality movie about people, but a weak horror
It’s rare to find a post-apocalyptic movie that manages to tell specific stories about specific people without delving into endless action.
“A Quiet Place: Day One” managed to preserve the general atmosphere of the first picture, but lost that very horror part. But although you are not scared at all, the racer for the local history is interesting from the beginning to the very end.
This is the best thing shown in cinemas right now. Fans of the franchise will definitely appreciate the new product.
