Microsoft is working on more ways to convince you to stick with Microsoft Edge over Google Chrome. A recent experimental browser update has included references to a feature that aims to track user preferences across browsers.
A Microsoft Edge gadget not yet activatedbut it was referenced in Edge Canary, one of the program’s experimental versions. The functions are named “msNurturingFeatureChromePBTrigger” and “msNurturingFeatureEdgeBrowserUsageLessThanThresholdPolicyManagerTrigger”.
Judging by their names, the functions are similar to the triggers found in Microsoft Edge can detect when the browser is underusedThis feature can help MS stay aware of computer usage patterns and thus better understand user habits.
Although it is not enabled or even ready in the current version, The feature may continue to be developed for a future update. This way, Microsoft can create more accurate tracking and enable automated campaigns to encourage the use of the native Windows browser.
Currently, Microsoft Edge already has some automatic campaigns enabled in the latest version. The browser can detect that the app is promoting itself by accessing the Chrome download page of the user and displaying a pop-up on the screen.
It’s unclear what Microsoft plans to do with the new triggers in Edge Canary, but more clues are likely to emerge soon. Either way, this isn’t necessarily good news for users who don’t want to use the company’s app.
However, it is worth noting that this functionality, like other new features added to the trial version, will never work.
