The device was developed by BiVACOR in collaboration with the Texas Heart Institute. The artificial heart, called the Total Artificial Heart (TAH), is made of titanium.
Unlike a regular heart transplant, this operation is seen as a temporary solution; the artificial heart does not replace the human heart, but serves as a stopgap measure until a new heart is available for transplant.
But it’s still an important development, because in the future, technology will allow people on the waiting list for a real heart to live without fear.
According to a report by Interesting Engineering, the first BiVACOR device implantation took place at Baylor Medical Center in St. Luke, Texas on July 9, 2024.
