“Our partners have been holding their leading positions in the field of video analysis for many years. Now a team of talented scientists from NtechLab is working on creating a face recognition system for the Atom electric car,” Igor Povarazdnyuk, CEO of Kama JSC, was quoted as saying in the press service of Rostec.

The state-owned corporation claims that this system is the first development of its kind using AI for cars. The solution will add security to the car and allow it to adapt to the specific family member driving it. To recognise it, a person only needs seven people in the driver’s seat, and authentication can also be done through a mobile app.

“The peculiarities of the development are due to certain limitations in the computing resources of the standard on-board computer of the vehicle. At the same time, the face recognition function must ensure maximum accuracy and speed,” said Alexey Palamarchuk, CEO of NtechLab.

Verification will be possible even in low light conditions, using glasses and hats. AI will be able to distinguish a living person from a silicone mask, a photograph and an image on a tablet.

For the time being, this feature is being developed only for “family” electric vehicles, which could theoretically be controlled by several drivers, for example, their spouses. In the future, it could be extended to electric vehicles operating in taxi and car-sharing services, where accurate recognition of drivers’ faces is also required.

At the end of July, the specialists completed the development of the Atom’s interior and showed its interior. The design concept is based on technology and minimalism.
