The man deliberately sabotaged the inclusion of neural networks in the project for two months. Using his position within the team, he deliberately introduced bugs into the code, which significantly slowed down work and led to constant crashes.
Tian loaded the Pickle files with malicious components that automatically introduced errors, replaced versions of the PyTorch library causing crashes, and deleted or replaced important training data by manipulating the checkpoints of neural networks.
This caused the entire team of thirty developers to spend two months unsuccessfully trying to fix the problems, unaware of the intern’s actions.
It was possible to find out the reasons for constant failures only after analyzing the logs. As a result, the project was disrupted, deadlines were missed, and customers’ expenses were wasted.
Despite the serious consequences, Tian was not punished by his school.
