D., assistant professor of gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Knowing the difference between an upset stomach and heart disease can be lifesaving, says Maya Balakrishnan. However, the risk of both conditions increases with age.
Heartburn is mainly related to the stomach and intestines. It usually occurs if you overeat or lie down immediately after eating. Symptoms of heartburn include a burning sensation in the chest or a metallic or sour taste in the mouth. Heartburn during the holidays can be caused by large meals, as well as salty, spicy foods, tomato-based products, chocolate, alcohol and caffeine. To prevent this situation, you need to be careful about foods that cause heartburn, eat small portions, walk after eating, and stay upright for at least three or four hours after eating.
Heart disease often includes chest pain. It occurs regardless of whether the person is at rest or stressed. Chest pain may also be accompanied by shortness of breath or dizziness. If you constantly experience this type of pain, consult your doctor.
