The Australian Parliament has passed a law banning children under 16 from using social media.

There will be social media operators to enforce the laws. If they violate, they will be fined US$50 million (~$32 million). The users themselves will not be punished.

It is noted that this is only about registering new users. It does not apply to existing users. Messengers, online games, educational platforms and other resources are not taken into account under the law. The exact list of social networks is unknown, but it is reported that YouTube is not subject to restrictions due to the fact that it is important for educational purposes.

The law will come into force at the end of 2025, with a trial period mid-year. [Reuters]
