People Target wants to control everything and its investments in artificial intelligence, it will also have to have the appropriate infrastructure necessary for this.

According to TechCrunch, the company Mark Zuckerberg plans to build a major new submarine fiber optic cable spanning the globe, a project spanning more than 40,000 kilometers that could have a total investment of more than $10 billion. Most importantly, Meta will be the sole owner and user of this cable.

The plan is to start with a budget of $2 billion, but as the project progresses, that figure will likely increase to more than $10 billion as the project spans years of work.

Meta is expected to talk more publicly about this in early 2025, when it confirms plans for the cable, including the planned route, capacity and some of the rationale for its construction.

“There is really limited supply on cable ships,” said Ranulph Scarborough, an industry analyst for the company submarine cables on TechCrunch. “They are now expensive and booked out for several years in advance. Finding available resources to do this in the near future is a challenge.” A likely scenario could include segmental construction, he added.

Thus, the Meta project may go through several stages before it finally takes hold.
