The International Space Station, which is the most complex and expensive object built by mankind, may soon cease to exist.
Roscosmos and NASA do not plan to release a replacement for it, but the American company Vast wants to do it instead. It is currently developing the world’s first private space station.
Recently, the company presented the design of a residential module, which surprised, perhaps, everyone. Forget the ISS, this is what the future of space now looks like.

Jed McCaleb
Vast is an American aerospace company founded by crypto billionaire Jed McCaleb. He is known for launching the Mt.Gox blockchain exchange in 2010, and in 2012 for creating the Ripple payment system. Now his fortune is estimated at $2.9 billion. All Vast developments are financed from his funds.
The CEO of Vast is Max Haot, the founder of the video service Vimeo. He became CEO after Vast bought the company Launcher, which caused Chaos. The launcher was developing rocket engines.
Unlike many other coating companies, Vast was not created to design rockets. Its initial goal is to develop research methods using artificial gravity.
Space station Haven-1
Among the first managers there are a huge number of top SpaceX specialists:
▶︎ Kyle Dedmon, former vice president of ground employment construction at SpaceX
▶︎ Tom Hayford, systems engineer working at Relativity Space and SpaceX
▶︎ Molly McCormick, former human factors engineer at SpaceX
▶︎ Colin Smith, former SpaceX propulsion engineer
In addition, the company advises former SpaceX vice president Hans Koenigsmann.

Why is another space station needed?
Space station Haven-1
Haven 1 should be the main result of Vast’s work. It will be the world’s first commercial zero-gravity space station, which will conduct experiments with artificial gravity – initially simulating lunar gravity.

Haven 1 will not be able to sustain itself for long periods of time, so astronauts will fly to it regularly. They will conduct experiments and observe the operation of the station.
Another important task of Haven-1 is to accept tourists’ decisions. The creators of the station believe that tourists will also participate in research, and not just observe the Earth from space.
We think our private astronauts are at least contributing to scientific innovation. At least they will sit in our Haven-1 laboratory and help find a cure for cancer. In microgravity, light skin cells can be grown exponentially faster. And these are the most exploratory innovations that we hope the people on Haven 1 will have, who will fly as they move rather than just catch a glimpse of Earth from space. It doesn’t look like a carnival scene. This is not a carnival ride.
Hillary Coe, Chief Designer and Marketing Director, Vast
It is unknown how much a flight to Haven 1 will cost. You can apply for it on the company’s website.
You don’t have a huge number of contracts with private astronauts yet, but they are expected to be awarded by the end of 2025.

What the Haven 1 space station will look like
Haven-1 Laboratory
The design of Haven-1 is what makes the station stand out from the ISS. The interior of the ISS was designed in the mid-90s and was focused on practicality and functionality. At first glance, Haven-1’s interior is the complete opposite.
Haven-1 looks like a very expensive space hotel, which you would expect to see in some movie without looking closely at life.
Some walls and doors will be made of maple, and there will be a lot of warm light throughout the station. One of the main elements of Haven-1 is a large window that will provide views of Earth.

The station’s chief designer is Hillary Coe. She She led production at SpaceX for five years, and before that she worked at Google and Apple.. The station is also being designed by designer Peter Russell-Clark. In Vast, he is responsible for the aesthetics of Haven-1.
Peter Russell-Clark is known for his work at Apple for over 20 years. He collaborated with Jony Ive on many important products such as the iMac, iPod nano, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. He also participated in the development of many iPhone and iPad models.. His name appears on more than 1,000 Apple patents. He left Apple in 2023.
Sleeping place on Haven-1
There will be a mini-gym at the station
But Haven-1’s design is not just about beauty and materials. Innovative solutions are also used here. For example, a sleep blanket that inflates provides enough pressure to ensure a comfortable sleep. This patented sleep system is the size of a double bed and is suitable for both side and back sleepers.
The astronaut guys laugh when they come into our office and promote the sleep platform. They would love to use this [во время своих повседневных миссий].
Hillary Coe, Chief Designer and Marketing Director, Vast
Haven-1 was conceived as a place where the bet would be “on life and prosperity, not just survival in space,” so comfort is of critical importance.

Tourists and astronauts have the ability to adjust the temperature and lighting to make “life on board the ship seem as normal as possible.”
I’m on three missions into space, and we’re learning from the experience and innovating to improve living and working conditions on the space station.
Andrew Feustel, NASA astronaut
Feustel and other astronauts help Vastu in designing the station.
From communication and communication in personal space and interaction with others on board, to the development of human progress on Earth and its properties, this Haven-1 part was designed with the experience of astronauts in mind.

The station itself will be small. Its length is 10 meters, width 3.8 meters.

When will the station be launched?
Haven-1 scheme
The station is expected to launch no earlier than August 2025 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Soon after, Vast plans to send a crew of four aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft for 30 days on the Vast-1 mission, after which they will travel to Earth. .
The first space tourists will be able to visit Haven-1 in 2026.. The average travel duration is 10 days.
The astronauts will receive safety training, but they will not be able to control or control the flight. Communication with Earth will be via Starlink.
For the first time, Haven 1 will operate as an independent space station. A huge parallel is developing a larger station to which Haven 1 will be docked in the future.
Project of the future Vast station
By 2028, Vast plans to launch a residential module called Starship with a diameter of 7 meters. It is being developed specifically for the Starship rocket from SpaceX.
By 2030, Vast wants to send a 100-meter rotating station, which will consist of seven Starship modules, into low Earth orbit.
It will be three times larger in area than the ISS and can accommodate up to 8 people. The ISS is designed for 7 people.

What to expect in the future
Vast wants people to be able to live in space just like they do on Earth. This needs to be provided with artificial gravity, which can reduce the stress on the body.
In addition, the company wants to make space travel commonplace for humans. But the first flights will be very expensive, and you won’t be able to afford them. The cost of travel will decrease as new methods are launched.
