Russia and Nicaragua began work within the framework of an intergovernmental commission to create a network of ATMs in the country that will accept cards from the Mir payment system. This was stated in an interview with Izvestia by Laureano Ortega, special representative of the president of Nicaragua for the development of relations with Russia.

“We hope to advance during 2025 in the creation of an entire network of ATMs of this type in the capital of Managua, as well as in other important cities of our country, to simplify the situation for Russian citizens,” said the official.
He added that in the future Mir cards may begin to be issued in Nicaragua. According to Ortega, this measure will help simplify trade relations and increase trade between countries. Likewise, in this way the Nicaraguan authorities will oppose the sanctions of the United States and the EU, said the president’s special representative.
In February, the United States imposed sanctions against the National Payment Card System, which operates Mir cards. After that, they were subject to payment restrictions in several countries, including Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan.
According to the Association of Russian Tour Operators and TASS, as of November Mir cards are fully operational in Abkhazia, Belarus, Cuba and South Ossetia. In early November, the Mir system was combined with the Iranian Shetab payment system, thanks to which it is now possible to withdraw money from Iranian cards in Russia.
