Federal and local officials are also warning the public not to point lasers at or fire at suspicious drones, as aircraft pilots report an increase in dangerous incidents involving lasers. Authorities fear misidentified drones could lead to accidental attacks on manned aircraft.
The White House emphasized that “no credible threat has been identified.” Homeland Security spokesman John Kirby noted that more than 1 million drones are legally registered in the United States, and thousands of them are used daily for commercial, hobbyist and law enforcement purposes. Of the 5,000 surveillance cases recently reported to the FBI, only 100 were deemed “credible for further investigation.”
