The hypermarket chain Lenta will reduce its activity in Chechnya by closing a store in Grozny. It was the only branch of the network in the republic and operated for nine years. Lenta’s director for the Southern region, Sergei Rubinchik, informed employees about the closure, Shopper’s writes, citing a video posted on social media.

The hypermarket was the only store of this format in Chechnya, said Mikhail Burmistrov, general director of Infoline-analytics. While the establishment is open, the closure may occur after the New Year holidays, which are traditionally the peak season for retail trade, the expert said.

After Lenta’s departure, only one federal food retail chain will remain in Chechnya: the discount store Svetofor, Shopper points out.

“Lenta” appeared in Chechnya in 2016. The head of the republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, participated in the opening of the hypermarket. He became the first buyer and bought two bottles of mineral water with a discount card. The volume of investments in construction exceeded 800 million rubles.

Lenta was the only store in Chechnya that sold alcohol, from 8:00 to 10:00 local time. This should have had a positive impact on performance, but network management probably considered the point unprofitable, Burmistrov noted. “The facility was not profitable and, apparently, had worse economic results than other Lenta hypermarkets,” said the expert.
