Trump’s legal team argued that the new administration needed time to negotiate the “political agreement” and asked the court to postpone the deadline. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the arguments on January 10.

The law requires ByteDance to divest TikTok. The Justice Department has called TikTok a powerful tool for espionage.

In response, TikTok said the law violated free speech protections under the First Amendment. The company noted that other Chinese apps such as Shein or Temu were not affected by the Congress.
