In a series of experiments involving nearly 6,000 adults, researchers found that people underestimated the value of reaching out to old friends they hadn’t contacted for a while. Recipients seemed to like this little gesture, usually a short “How are you” message, more than the sender expected.

The study’s authors came to a simple conclusion: If a friend or acquaintance comes to mind, why not write to them?
