Dark skin color is important for white bears for two reasons. First, dark colors always absorb sunlight better than light. This means that at minus temperatures, with black skin, polar bears protect the heat better.
The second reason is that there are too many melanin in dark skin. This protects white bears from the increasing harmful ultraviolet radiation level in the North Pole.
