Scientists have created metal complexes containing thiophenecarboxylic acid anions and phenanthroline that can fight ovarian, breast, colorectal and lung cancer cells.

A special feature of the development was the combination of luminescent properties and selective cytotoxicity. The brightness of the compounds allows monitoring the penetration of the drug into cells and tissues.

Metal complexes consist of a metal atom and organic ligands, and changing these ligands helps control their properties. Optimization of the composition made it possible to increase brightness, stability and effectiveness against tumor cells.

The study was carried out jointly by experts from the eponymous Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry. NS Kurnakov named after the Institute of Physics. Named after PN Lebedev, National Oncology Center. NN Blokhin and St. Petersburg State University.
