The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has banned the import of telecommunications equipment from Huawei Technologies, ZTE Corporation, Hytera Communications, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology and Dahua Technology and their subsidiaries.

The agency’s website states that Chinese equipment is “deemed to represent unacceptable national security within the United States of America.” It is noted that there is a high chance of espionage by China.

The FCC builds our national security by ensuring that untrusted communications equipment is not allowed to be used within our borders, and we continue to do so. These new rules are an important part of our ongoing efforts to protect the American people from telecommunications-related national security.

The FCC also launched a reimbursement program for the removal of unsafe equipment already installed in the US. FCC member Brendan Carr noted that this is the first time in the history of the regulator that they have voted to ban the issuance of import permits for new national security export equipment.
