Google wants to bring the Blink browser engine, which is used not only in Chrome, but also in Chrome, to iOS. However, per current App Store guidelines, all web browsers for iPhone and iPad must use the built-in version of WebKit, which basically makes all browsers behave like Safari, 9to5Google notes.

These rules are still in effect, so Google has no plans to release any Blink-based browsers on the App Store yet. However, there is growing talk that Apple is easing its restrictions on the App Store, including browsers. Therefore, by porting Blink to iOS, before the facilitation happens, Google will have already “hooked” on facilitating a possible future migration as well as demonstrating Blink’s advantages over WebKit.

It is worth noting that these are all prototype images and are not intended to be used as a full web browser. Google’s next big step is to ensure that this version of Blink/Chromium for iOS passes all of the many tests that ensure all aspects of the browser work correctly.
