Twitter support responded: “Some parts of Twitter may not work as expected. We’ve made an internal change with some unintended consequences.”
Apparently these changes were part of the project to stop free access to the Twitter API. On February 1, the social network announced this. The end of free access to the API means the end of the existence of third-party Twitter clients and also severely limits the work of researchers.
Now the social networking team is working on a paid API. According to The Verge, only one reliability engineer was involved in the project. On Monday, it made a “wrong configuration change” that “breaks the Twitter API”, according to an employee. This change had serious consequences and as a result many of Twitter’s internal tools were disabled.
