Professor of microbiology and immunology, Ph.D. Denise Monak says it takes time for harmful microorganisms to spread into your gut. Therefore, you will not immediately encounter diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. Also, if several people eat contaminated food, not all of them will get sick. And those who are sick experience symptoms at different times.

When you will experience symptoms of poisoning depends on a number of factors. From an individual’s gut microbes, what other foods a person eats, how many pathogens they consume, how strong their immune system is.

Therefore, if you suspect you have food poisoning, it is unlikely that you will know which product is causing it. It could be the sandwich you ate last week or the juice you drank yesterday.

Monak recommends drinking plenty of water and avoiding foods containing fiber in case of poisoning. Most people recover from poisoning within a few days. However, microbial pathogens can remain in the gut for up to a week.
