The researchers identified six dimensions of an effective ocean acidification policy, as well as specific metrics for each that officials can use to evaluate and guide their own policies.
The researchers used the system to assess the current state of preparedness for ocean acidification in Australia, home to the world’s largest coral reef system. They found that while the country was generally well prepared, it lacked policy coherence and broader climate protection measures.
The researchers stressed that ocean acidification is not an “isolated” problem, but is closely linked to other anthropogenic threats such as warming, sea level rise, oxygen loss and eutrophication.
