Google, due to a bug in the Google Pay service, accidentally transferred money to customers, amounts from $10 to $1 thousand reached user accounts.
The company sent the funds as part of the Google Pay “reward” program. Upon discovering the error, the corporation apologized and launched a payment cancellation process. But some customers managed to spend money or transfer it to other accounts. Google will not demand a return from them.
As developer Mishaal Rahman explained, the credits were received as part of Dogfooding (a term for software beta testing). According to the specialist, this type of program is used, as a rule, by the employees or partners themselves. But due to a technical glitch, the service sent money to the unintended.
Upon discovering the flaw, the company sent a letter to users saying they can keep the funds.
“If we couldn’t pay off the loan, you can save money. No further action is required,” Google said in the letter.
Some users reported that since the beginning of April they have already received several such transfers from $10 to $700.
The Google Pay service stopped working with Russian banks that fell under Western sanctions in the spring of 2022.
