JUICE will explore Jupiter’s most intriguing moons, Ganymede, Europa and Callisto, which are supposed to have subterranean oceans covered with ice and where microbial life may exist.

Between 2031 and 2034, JUICE will make nearly three dozen transits of these moons and study their icy crusts in more detail. Equipment includes a Janus high-resolution optical camera, a spectrometer, an ice penetrating radar, a magnetometer and other instruments.

The device will also fly on an additional mission with NASA’s Europa Clipper, scheduled for launch in 2024. The joint mission will conduct a comprehensive study of the habitability of the subterranean oceans of exoplanet worlds, possibly pointing to a promising location for the search for possible life.

After numerous orbits around Jupiter in late 2034, JUICE is scheduled to enter orbit around Ganymede, where it will stay for another year to conduct the most detailed analysis of the moon’s interior ever done.
