CAAD researchers found that all found videos are monetized, and Google monetizes the ads placed on those videos. At the same time, the tech giant always refers to its own policy, and accordingly any climate-related misinformation is ruthlessly removed from the video hosting service.

In this context, CAAD recalled its proposal to broaden the definition of disinformation about climate change: arguments and an emphasis on the idea that global warming cannot be tackled, or advertisements that promote ineffective methods to tackle these problems.

“Google supports climate misinformation they say they want to stop. “Disinformation continues because it’s profitable, and Big Tech needs to remove this incentive,” said Erika Saber, climate disinformation spokesperson for Friends of the Earth, a nonprofit affiliated with CAAD.
