Recently, the news spread in the media world that a Google engineer found a vulnerability in Telegram that opens to monitor users through a camera and microphone.

At the same time, a representative of the messenger said that they are already working on an update that closes this security hole. And today, the presence of the head of Telegram, Pavel Durov, refutes self-vulnerability:

Russian newspapers write that Telegram has discovered a “confirmed vulnerability” in applications for computers from Apple. This is wrong.

On the contrary, in our understanding, we found that there was no vulnerability. Because the alleged “vulnerability” was as follows: “If access was already available to this computer, it could control your camera and microphone via Telegram.” But if the computer is already compromised, then accessing the microphone via Telegram is the least of the problems worth talking about.

As I mentioned earlier, in technical aspects, the media often chase big headlines and mislead users.

This is sad: as a result, people may not attach importance to real threats. For example, WhatsApp has implemented a simple call or watching a video in order to have full access to the phone being used. Because of this vulnerability, WhatsApp became a spyware that was distributed by hackers, hacked into any smartphone with WhatsApp.

If media headlines about imaginary and perceived threats arise, people will no longer take them seriously – it will turn out like in the fable about the boy who unnecessarily shouted “Wolf”.

– Pavel Durov
