Sergey Shadrin, professor of the Automobile Department of the Moscow State Technical University of Automobile and Road Construction, said that in the hot season, an electric car should be charged at night and not left in the sun for a long time. Throughout the year, such a car is best kept in a parking lot with underfloor heating, where it is warm in winter and cool in summer.
The expert emphasized that at abnormal temperature – above 40 ° C – it is better not to leave an electric car in the open sun and not charge it. At temperatures above 50 °C, traction batteries begin to degrade the characteristics of the battery, reducing its service life and getting hotter until it ignites. The Russian expert also noted that battery cooling systems use their own energy, which reduces the power reserve.
Shadrin says it’s better to charge an electric car at night in the warm season and store it in an open, ventilated parking lot.
