Have you ever heard an amazing song playing in speakersonly to have it end before you can pull out your phone and Shazam? It’s definitely happened to me (and may have ruined my chance to discover great bands like Röyksopp).
Those days are gone now that Google has expanded its feature Circle to searchAll you have to do is press and hold the navigation bar or the home button on your compatible device, and a new music icon will appear next to the search bar. Tap this icon, and if a song is playing on your device or on the store’s speakers, it will try to identify it. If the song has ended, start humming. Seriously, you can hum a song and Circle to Search will still be able to identify it.
The feature is rolling out to all Google users with a compatible phone, but it was first spotted by a Reddit user who said it was added in the latest update to the Google app, version 15.32.37.28 to be exact. If you don’t have access to the feature yet, make sure the app is up to date.
The song search feature is similar to existing features like the Now Playing feature on Pixel devices. Now Playing does essentially the same thing, but it’s a Pixel-exclusive feature. The Circle to Search feature adds convenience and utility to the palm of your hand, especially when you consider the other tricks it has up its sleeve.
Earlier this year, Circle to Search added a translation feature. Just point your camera at foreign-language text, and your phone will translate it with the tap of a button. Now you have no excuse not to try the most exotic dishes on the menu.
Google usually updates its devices in stages, so even if someone still has the song search feature, it may not be available on their device yet. Just wait a little while, and it will be here soon. Never miss that niche Norwegian electronic music from the Geico commercial again.
