A handful of enthusiastic and sophisticated collectors pushed the price from just over $10,000 on Sunday afternoon to this record high Sunday night.

Here’s how LCG Auctions explains it on the item’s listing page:

“One of the most important and ubiquitous inventions of our lives, the iPhone was first introduced by Steve Jobs at MacWorld San Francisco on January 9, 2007. The original iPhone was equipped with 4/8GB storage, an innovative touchscreen, 2-megapixel camera and web browser. The iconic box featured a life-size image of the iPhone with 12 icons on the screen. It quickly became Apple’s most successful product, changed the smartphone industry forever, and was named Invention of the Year by Time magazine in 2007.”

In addition to the value of the purchase, no further details have been disclosed about the new owner of this collector’s item. If kept in its original condition, it could be much more valuable at a future auction.

Beginning with the original iPhone, mobile devices ceased to be what they were to emulate the concept of Apple device. Thus, this revolution that started 15 years ago continues to bear fruit even outside of Apple.
