A new research team has found a disturbing increase inevaporation of the freshwater lakes of the whole world. In addition to the phenomenon of evaporation, there is also the intensification of algal blooms and lack of oxygen. The evaporation level keeps getting higher.

Lake evaporation plays a more important role in the hydrological cycle than previously thought. We found that the lake’s long-term evaporation is 1,500 plus or minus 150 cubic miles per year, which is 15.4 percent greater than previous estimates.

Gang Zhao, an ecologist at Texas A&M University

The consequence of evaporation is essentially that for our climate and for the meteorology of our planet. Natural and artificial lakes cover 5 million square kilometers of the Earth’s surface. Due to the decline of the ice sheet, there are larger areas of water. They let the air absorb these water molecules. All this speeds up the water cycle from its presence on Earth to its dispersion in the atmosphere.

Zhao and his team to measure the truth volume of water lost, had to calculate the evaporation for each lake separately. So this process was carried out by them for 1.42 million lakes around the world. A meticulous but authentic work.

The vault of heaven quenches its thirst by more than 3 trillion liters more per year than in the past. The reservoirs contributed most to this evaporation. Zhao and the team released the data created, the GLEV (Global Lake Evaporation Volume). In addition, they are urging water management decision makers and the wider scientific community to use it.
