From 2023, all new vehicles of the Hyundai Group receives OTA software updates, which stands for: over the air. In 2025, things will get more interesting, according to Hyundai, all of its cars will become “software-defined vehicles”.

“Cars will become like smartphones, there will be a transformation of the concept of vehicles,” said Chung Kook Park, No. 1 in the Hyundai Group’s research and development division. In short, cars will constantly receive new features with constant updates.

It is a philosophy that has affected the entire automotive sector for quite some time. For several years now, brands such as Ford have provided the opportunity to improve the functions of their latest generation of cars thanks to OTA updates. Tesla was at the forefront of this.

Updates are not always free. In some cases, the updates allow you to unlock real-world options, such as Tesla’s most advanced autonomous driving (the cost of which varies from year to year depending on the features introduced).

Going into details, Hyundai explained that the new OTA updates they will introduce new features (the most banal example being infotainment) as well as various kinds of vehicle performance improvements. For example, it is not uncommon for electric cars on the market to see their range improve after a software update designed to optimize their efficiency.

“These updates can be installed anywhere and at any time, the driver does not need to take their vehicle to a service center,” added Hyundai.
