And now another very interesting one has joined all of them, based on the use of a single piano chord.

Basically, people who have nightmares try to associate this piano chord with happy story. This story must have been written by them before, so it becomes sort of preparation.

In fact, therapy until recently consisted only of the latter, without the pianoforte. The problem is that it used to fail individually so tested with this combinationwhich has already shown very promising results, as well described by the authors of the discovery in a study published in Current biology.

Rewriting nightmares

The origin of nightmares is completely unknown, which is why it is so difficult to fight them. But it is known that dreams, good or bad, they can be trained. There are even people who can lucid dreamingin which they act according to their will.

Leaving aside the pharmacological approach that has been studied specifically to mimic lucid dreams, what many scientists have explored is prevent nightmares something known as Image rehearsal therapy.

This consists in having patients write down their worst nightmares as if they were a story, but adding a happy ending. Then they should practice by repeating that new story again and again to prepare the brain for the moment when at night it should face a nightmare. The truth is that this type of therapy has been very helpful for some patients. However, there are others in which it is practically useless. It is not known exactly what causes these important differences in results, so it is difficult to try to find a solution.

However, a group of scientists from University of Genoa believed that this solution could be combined with another type of therapy developed in 2010. It found that certain memories can be activated during sleep using associate them with an irritant. It wasn’t necessarily related to the nightmares, but it might have worked.

This was done for two weeks, during which they had to write sleep logwhich reflected his nightmares. In fact, in all cases, their frequency has decreased, which is good news. However, it was clear differences between both groups. Specifically, in the first they went from the average from 2.58 to 1.02 nightmares per weekand in the second the number fell from 2.94 to 0.19. In addition, the latter admitted that he had more happy dreams.

The diary process was also repeated after three months, so that the nightmares were found to increase slightly, 1.48 and 0.33 per week, specifically. However, there are still huge differences from his sleep to therapy.

Therefore, it seems that the combination with the sound of the piano can significantly improve the other procedure that began to take shape in 2010. And it becomes more and more obvious how therapeutic music can be. So much so that sometimes even one chord is enough.
