Microsoft Defender for Endpoint is causing issues for Windows 10 20H2 users. For example, users have to deal with very high memory usage, a black screen after logging in, Word 2016 and newer not opening, and Windows Event Viewer taking a long time to show events.
The high memory usage is probably due to a memory leak bug. The problem is not new and Microsoft has already fixed it. The company states that the problem started with a signature structure of 1,363,177.0. However, it seems that the bug has returned and the previous fix was only a temporary fix.
High memory usage by Defender’s Anti-Malware Service Executable process (MsMpEng.exe) is a common error, and sometimes a workaround to reduce memory usage is to disable real-time protection.
