President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) made his first official international address at COP27 (UN climate conference) this Wednesday afternoon (16) Brazilian time.

In his speech, Lula reiterated that Brazil will once again be active in negotiations and agreements on nature protection and combating climate change. Under the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) over the past four years, Brazil has officially embraced a flirtatious rhetoric with climate denial and sought to hide the deforestation figures on its then-growth lands.

“This invitation to a newly elected president, before he takes office, acknowledges that the world is in a rush to see Brazil rejoin the climate debate,” Lula said at the start of his speech.

“I’m here today to say that Brazil is ready to rejoin efforts to build a healthier planet,” said Lula.

For the president-elect, more leadership is needed to reverse global warming and implement international agreements signed at events like the COP.

Lula also stressed the need for greater cooperation with the richest countries, which are the main culprits of pollution causing climate change and disproportionately harm populations in poorer countries, which have worse infrastructure and are more vulnerable to insecurity. .

The next term president’s speech also included the fight against environmental crimes. Lula stated that his government, which took office on January 1, will strengthen the structure to eliminate threats such as deforestation and illegal mining.

Lula said in his speech that he will work to eliminate deforestation by 2030. “There can be no climate security for the world without a protected Amazon,” said the incoming president. “Combating climate change will have the highest profile in the structure of my next government,” he said.

At COP27, Lula argued with the UN that COP30, to be held in 2025, will take place in an Amazon state.
