Not only the employees, Twitter he has also cleaned up his house External employees. According to new rumors, the social network is said to have ended any collaborative relationship with about 80% of its members freelance contractors. Many of them were about content moderation, which is one of the aspects that companies and institutions – especially after the acquisition of Elon Musk – are looking at with greater caution.

Last week, some of Twitter’s top advertisers decided to freeze all investment in the platform precisely out of fear that the social network would no longer be able to maintain minimum standards of brand safety. Translated? They fear that Twitter will become a jungle full of racism and conspiracy theories.

Freelancers affected by the layoff would lose access to Slack and their work email address without further notice from the company. Breaking the news is The Platformer by Casey Newton, former top journalist at The Verge. Newton is responsible for the scoop on Cognizant, the third-party company that outsourced Facebook’s moderation services (subjecting its employees to extreme and unhealthy working conditions).

According to Platformer, Twitter, out of a total of 5,500 people, has terminated the employment relationship with more than 4,400 freelancers. While we are talking about external staff, the employees involved had roles within some of the social network’s major divisions, including moderate content and maintenance of IT systems. Partly for this reason, it is feared that their sudden dismissal could jeopardize the proper functioning of Twitter.

Immediately after the transfer of ownership, Twitter – not without complications and grotesque consequences – laid off 50% of its employees.
