Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, didn’t leave Tesla and Elon Musk in a good place in his latest interview. CNN (by using electric). The engineer lashed out at the electric car company, and the autopilot in particular, stating that if someone wants to know how AI can kill people, they should buy a Tesla.

“If you want AI research to go wrong and try to kill you every chance you get, get a Tesla,” Wozniak explained in an interview after being asked about self-driving the aforementioned vehicles.

The Apple co-founder stressed that he had previously believed in the possibility of Tesla vehicles gaining autonomous driving capabilities through a software update. He also recalled the promise Elon Musk made to him when he convinced him to buy the Model S. “At the end of 2016, she will drive across the country by herself,” he told him. However, Wozniak claims that this “not even close to reality”.

This isn’t the first time Wozniak has filed charges against Tesla and the autonomous driving of its cars. A year ago, the engineer spoke in another interview about his bad experience with his Model S autopilot due to “ghost braking”, because of which the car significantly reduces the speed on any road. Something that, of course, can cause an accident if, for example, this happens on a busy highway.

In any case, Wozniak’s latest statements seem to be based on various reports of fatal accidents involving the autopilot. One of them, and probably the most famous, was the collision that ended the life of an Apple engineer in 2018, but there are dozens of similar accidents. In fact, Tesla confirmed a few months ago that the Department of Justice was investigating possible autopilot deaths.

Interestingly, both Hozniak and Elon Musk are about the same concerned about the dangers of artificial intelligence. Both executives signed an open letter asking for a halt to the development of new language models in order to prevent the “catastrophic consequences for society” of AI like GPT-4.
