Scammers call people pretending to be tech support specialists and convince them to install apps on their phones for verification. In fact, these programs are designed by scammers and allow them to steal money. This was reported on VTB.
The scheme looks like this: scammers offer customers to install the bank’s official application on their smartphones to scan for vulnerabilities. When a person accepts and installs this app, scammers gain access to his phone and try to steal money from his bank account.
They use different methods to reach victims: they call, they write to instant messengers, they use the bank logo. They may say they have noticed suspicious activity in the bank app and offer to download the app for verification.
Once the app is installed, scammers try to obtain personal data and gain access to a bank account. These fake apps really give crooks access to the device and they start stealing money. It is important to note that a real bank would never ask you to install such apps for verification.
