He said that the ability to disable algorithms that generate recommendations based on user preferences is not exclusive, such functions will soon be introduced all over the world. But for Russian users, this is done first of all.
Gorelkin suggested that such actions of YouTube may be related to its laws. The company is rushing to implement it and is “trying to mitigate the associated risks.”
The MP explained that the law does not actually require the mandatory disabling of recommendations, but provides users with such an opportunity. In addition, clear rules regarding the operation of technologies and what data and to what extent are collected for this should be explained. Now, the most understandable explanation of these processes is not used, and Roskomnadzor is unlikely to be happy with it. It is important that YouTube follows the recommendations of the Russian editor.
Gorelkin also said he’s trying to disable suggestions in the YouTube mobile app. However, the expected result did not come: Videos on channels that this user did not subscribe to did not disappear from the main page. “It seems that the emergency implementation of the new function has failed somewhere (or maybe the platform just doesn’t want to part with the data it’s been collecting about me and other users over the years),” the MP said.
