Samara University has developed a program to help Russian aviation switch to environmentally friendly fuel. This software package, based on the ASTRA system, will allow you to evaluate how the characteristics of the aircraft will change when using different types of biofuels. As a result of the analysis, the program will draw a conclusion regarding the feasibility of using eco-fuel in this aircraft.
Currently, the program takes into account the parameters of biofuels obtained from bio-raw materials, but there are also plans to add synthetic fuels, eco-fuels from recycled sources and liquefied aviation fuel. Although the cost of biofuel is still high, the downward trend in production suggests that it could replace conventional kerosene in aviation in the future.
It is also worth noting that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) plans to introduce mandatory standards as early as 2027 to encourage air carriers to use environmentally friendly fuels. Airlines that do not use eco fuel will have to pay compensation. These payments are estimated to be approximately 2 billion euros for 2027 alone.
